Vegan Dim Sum - Baked Pork Buns

BAKED PORK BUNS CHAR SIU BAO RECIPE

(makes 8 buns)

Filling:

  • 1 can young jackfruit, drained
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons. hoisin sauce
  • 1tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vegan oyster sauce
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Chinese cooking wine
  • 1 tablespoon brown rice syrup
  • ¼ tsp. Chinese five spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, grated
  • 1/2 ginger, grated

Topping:

  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds

Directions

  1. Start by tearing jackfruit into strips. Then mix everything in the filling until combined. Set aside and place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  2. Divide the milkbread dough into 8 balls.
  3. Using a rolling pin, roll out the balls into 5-inch disks focusing on having the edges slightly thinner than the middle.
  4. Fill each disk with about 2 tablespoons of filling. Bring the edges up and seal bun. Flip around having the seam side on the bottom.
  5. Repeat step 4 until all the buns are filled. Let the buns rest for about 1 hour.
  6. Brush the buns using the milkbread butter mix. Top with sesame seeds.
  7. Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes or until the buns get golden brown.
  8. Serve immediately.
